Split Night Sleep Study

It’s true that a sleep study is something that gives people a lot anxiety. It is the fear of the unknown. It is the fear of being watched and it is the fear of what the test will find. Oh, and those wires. Those wires tend to scare everyone. But you have to know that a sleep study is really in your best interest. Don’t get caught up in the idea that a sleep study is a scary move. It’s a rather serious move and one that will help you in the long run.

Now you know all about the wires. You know all about the attempt to make you comfortable but what really scares you is the sleeping itself. That is what makes you feel crazed and worried. Well, this is a firm assurance that you shouldn’t worry about anything. The night is about letting you sleep.

There are two types of sleep studies. There is the one where they just watch you sleep then determine your condition and then have you come back for a second night to fit you for a mask and see how they can help you sleep better.

Then of course there is the split night sleep study which means they spend the first part of the night determining your sleeping ability and then if you require it they spend the second part of the night testing you out with the different masks that are available. If you are lucky and your insurance company is lucky to then you will get a split night and get it all figured out in the same night.

Don’t worry at all about which one you pick. They are both helpful and the point isn’t to save you the most money but to find the best possible solution to your condition.

Sleeping In The Sleep Study

Once you arrive at the sleep clinic and you are comfortable, after they hook you up with the electrodes and after they make sure you are ready to go for a comfortable night’s sleep, then the real testing begins. Assuming you, like so many others, are part of a split night sleep study then you will be happy to note that the evening is a one and done shot.

Once sleep begins they will ask you to begin to sleep in one position. For most people, especially those with sleep apnea, that position is on the back. From there they will monitor how much oxygen you are getting to your brain and how much oxygen you are taking in and giving out. Rest assured if you are on your back early on and they see that you are not breathing or you are pausing for too long or gasping for breath they will cease with the first part of the study and just go directly for the cpap machine to try and give you some relief.

If you are ok enough to just sleep but with nothing severe interrupting your breathing then you will sleep without interruption until they ask you to change positions. For most people this involves going from their back to their side. They like to have you in two different positions in order to really get a full scope of your sleeping.

Once that happens they will then monitor your need for a c-pap machine. It’s not always that they will need to put the mask on you. The truth is that they may not need to put it on you, depending on the severity level. If you do need it they will put it on you and see how it works for you. And it might just change your life.
