Where Does Addiction Stem From?

Whether or not you are currently struggling with an addiction, it is important to be able to comprehend what causes drug addictions and the best ways to ward them off or eliminate them once they take hold. It is important that you be aware of the fact that addictions most commonly stem from psychological dependence, and this psychological dependence stems from your brain. It is important to understand the path toward addiction so that you can identify an addiction as it occurs and eliminate it from your life before it rears its ugly head full blast.

Addiction typically starts out with a single use of the substance. You try it, just to see how it impacts your body. Whether you are looking for a high, or something to mellow you out, the impact is the same on your body. Your brain appreciates the new feelings, and the drug convinces your brain that you most certainly want more. You start craving it just as you would crave chocolate or greasy potato chips, but the cravings become more intense as the drug use continues. Your body begins to go through withdrawals when you do not get enough of the drug, and there are physical and emotional ramifications of stopping the drug use.

Addiction spirals out of control swiftly, without really giving you a chance to just stop. Unfortunately, an addiction can become very serious very fast, requiring that you get professional help. When you cannot do it on your own, the only solution is to get help from a rehabilitation facility like MichaelsHouse.com. Here you will be able to develop healthy habits and lifestyle changes for yourself while overcoming the physical and emotional hold that the drug has had on you. The right rehabilitation facility can go a long way in helping you overcome your addiction problem and live a healthy lifestyle once and for all.

The Physical Effects of Alcoholism

Everyone knows that the abuse of alcohol affects your emotions and your life in a myriad number of ways. But what a lot of people forget about is that, even when you have only been abusing for a fairly short time, you can suffer great damage to your body. Not only can your brain be damaged by the effects of alcohol consumption, but your liver, your kidneys, and even your heart can be damaged. After all, alcohol is a poison, no matter how well it may be dressed up and socialized. So obviously, the sooner you or someone else that you love can get help with your or their alcohol dependency, the sooner the damage can be ceased. And in some cases, it can even end up being reversed.

Every time you take a drink of alcohol, it kills a few of your brain cells. And while your brain has hundreds of millions of cells to burn away, every cell that you lose makes it just a little bit more difficult for you to do the basic (and not so basic) things that you need to do in your life. Over time, an alcohol abuser can lose a lot of memories, and a significant amount of their cognitive functions. So the sooner you stop and get yourself some help, the less likely you will be to enter a premature state of dementia.

In addition to that, the parts of your body that process your blood are also hurt by alcohol usage. Your liver, your kidneys, and even your heart are damaged by the effects of alcohol. And this damage gets worse over time, to the point where it is irreversible. In time, this can even kill a person. But if you are ready to finally break free of this self destructive cycle, you might try visiting Rehab-International.org, where you can find a place to get yourself some help. The damage done might still be reversible.

The Common Health Problems Caused By Excessive Steroid Use

Steroids are commonly used in the treatment of various health conditions. Steroids are used by a person who is suffering from health problems like asthma, stroke, nerve damage and many other conditions. When these steroids are used for the treatment of the disease, some of the people who are treated with this drug can also suffer from some side effects because of this drug.

There are various health problems and side effects that are caused by the excessive use of the drugs. Some of the common side effects are listed here. A person who is given this medication can suffer from steroid induced hypertension. Hypertension or increased blood pressure is called as a silent killer. This is a disease that has been seen to affect many people in all age groups. Though the disease can affect a person on its own because of various risk factors, a person who is on steroid therapy can also be affected by the disease. When the steroid therapy is stopped, the person will also stop suffering from the disease.

The other common problem that can be seen in a person who is suffering from excessive steroid use is steroid induced diabetes. Diabetes too is a condition that can lead to various complications. Excessive use of steroids can cause this disease. It is important for the person who is suffering from this disease to control the disease and sugar levels.

Another common side effect of the use of steroids is that the person may suffer from weakness of the bones, which is also called as osteoporosis. This is not a condition that is seen in young people, but those who use steroids for a long time can also suffer from this disease. Other than this, steroid induced cataract is also another disease that is commonly seen in a person using steroids.

What Are Some of the Side Effects of Lithium?

Lithium is a drug used to control manic-depressive (or bipolar) episodes. When used properly, lithium can be effective for this, but it does have side effects. Some of the lithium side effects are listed below, but this should not be considered an all-inclusive list.

One of the most common side effects can be weight gain. According to some sources, this is the side-effect lithium users reported most often, and many stated that they could not understand why this was happening. Several explanations have been given, including that lithium causes increased thirst, and some users quench this thirst by drinking a large number of high-calorie drinks.

Lithium can also have an effect on a person’s metabolism, causing it to slow down. When body metabolism is slowed for any reason, weight gain can result.

Lithium users can control weight gain by remaining active, eating a healthy diet that has an appropriate number of calories, and limiting unhealthy foods from their diets. All of these can help in weight maintenance.

Another side effect of lithium is the body’s inability to maintain proper sodium levels. For this reason, lithium users should not cut down on salt or switch to a salt substitute unless instructed to do so by their health care practitioners. However, this does not mean that salt intake should be increased, as this can cause problems in and of itself.

Other side effects include shaking hands, muscle weakness, and abdominal discomfort (sometimes related to diarrhea or vomiting). More severe side effects include blurred vision, seizures, or excessive shaking. Any of the last three symptoms mentioned can also be signs of lithium toxicity. If they occur, seek medical attention.

Taking lithium in the exact dosage prescribed can help alleviate or diminish side effects. If they become too severe, the user should consult with his health care provider about the possibility of adjusting the dosage.

Do You Have Sleep Apnea?

There is something that you might be living with that you have never been aware of. Its something that haunts your sleep and follows you all day long. It’s something called sleep apnea and millions of people all over the world have it. Could you be one of them? Perhaps you aren’t even aware that this problem exists, so let’s look closer at this chronic condition.

Sleep apnea in short is a blocking of the airway that causes a patient to snore or gasp for breath in their sleep. It may make a patient wake up several times a night without even knowing it. Here is exactly how the condition works. When you are sleeping, especially on your back, you tend to relax both your jaw and your tongue. What this does is it creates a blockage in your throat. That blockage creates a need for air. This will force you to snore or gasp and wake you up in the middle of the night. Even dozens of times in a single hour. This will limit your ability to get effective R.E.M sleep which is the deep sleep your body and brain requires in order to function properly the next day.

Many people with sleep apnea will wake up and urinate during the night. Sometimes multiple times. Many people will sleep apnea will experience weight gain. Many with sleep apnea will find themselves nodding off or passing out the very next day. The truth is that sleep apnea can deprive you of the quality of your life. The good news is that there is help available so you don’t have to go through the process alone. You can actually get machines and do some home remedies in order to help you sleep well through the night. Don’t let sleep apnea get the best of you.

The CPAP Machine

If you have recently realized that you are having trouble sleeping through the night then you are probably familiar with the term sleep apnea. It’s a condition that affects millions of people and it is something that can be helped by the care of a doctor. If you have been mulling the option related to sleep apnea then there is no doubt that you have heard of something called a c-pap machine.

The idea of c-pap makes many people a little uncomfortable but before we get into why it’s so good, let’s take a look at what causes sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is caused by the tongue and chin cutting off the passage way to through the throat. This means that are cannot be moved in or out. This is what causes a patient to snore or to gasp for breath or to simply stop breathing. This will cause you or anyone else to have significantly less sleep throughout the night making you feel tired and run down the night day.

This is where the c-pap machine can be the breath of fresh air you have been looking for. The way the cpap machine works is that it is a hose that goes through a nasal or full on mask that will put a continuous flow of air into your throat keeping it open for you to breath in and out all through the night.

The effects and benefits of the c-pap machine are amazing. Most people talk about the amazing results they get from these wonderful machines. There is far less snoring. There is less tossing and turning. There is no waking up during the night and there is almost no falling asleep the next day. The mask might seem funny to you but the benefits of the machine could change your life.

Getting Diagnosed With Diabetes

One of the worst things you can hear at your annual physical is that you might have diabetes. It’s a sobering thought and one you wish didn’t enter your life but you are smart enough to know you will have to tackle it head on. You know it’s not good, but maybe that is all you know about it. The truth is that you have to understand a disease a little bit better if you have any hopes in controlling the disease so here are a few things to think about as you start your treatment.

When a doctor tests your sugar he is looking for something called your fasting blood glucose. The idea behind this is that even without food coming into your body that your pancreas is able to regulate the blood glucose so that your body is way out of whack. The truth is however, that if you are diabetic that those tests will tell a different story. For instance, the blood glucose level at all times(except for RIGHT after a meal) should be between 80 and 120. If you take a test and it’s well higher than that then there could be a problem. This is where the idea that you are a diabetic comes into play.

It’s not an easy thing to believe, that you are a diabetic but if you manage it well you could be living stress free. They will usually ask you to do two things at diagnosis. The first thing they will ask you to do is pick up a blood glucose monitor and test strips so that you can monitor your blood glucose levels daily or perhaps even more frequently. The other thing they will ask you to do is to start on medication. It’s not as bad as you might think. It could save your life.

Know the Number One Hazard of Sitting

For many workers, sitting is a part of the job. This sedentary lifestyle is one that many people consider inevitable, but new research may be just what you need to get out of your chair. Dr. Marc Hamilton, one of the biomedical professors on staff at the University of Missouri in Columbia, said, “Chair time is an insidious hazard because people haven’t been told it’s a hazard.”

What the doctor is referring to is new information that physiologists discovered showing a connection between sitting and a reduction in the body’s ability to burn fat. When you sit, it shuts down your body’s circulatation of enzymes called lipase, which absorb fat in the body. When lipase enzymes work correctly, they can improve your health by prompting your body to burn fat and cholesterol—even if you aren’t working out.

Turning off the lipases enzymes causes fat to re-circulate through the blood stream, and the body may store the excess as body fat. In some cases, the excess fat will clog arteries, causing further health issues. By shutting down the lipase enzymes, sitting may also contribute to metabolic syndrome. In this United States, more than 47 million adults have the condition. Metabolic syndrome may contribute to heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

In comparison to sitting, standing offers several health benefits. It engages your muscles and uses blood glucose. Some studies show it may help reduce the risk of developing diabetes and improve HDL, known as good cholesterol. Standing may burn as much as 60 calories an hour.

Individuals who sit for an extended amount of time each day may want to stand as much as possible. Swap out a desk where you can sit for one where you can stand. Watch sporting events while standing. You can even eat while standing. If you don’t have the ability to swap your desk, try standing during breaks. Your body and your waistline will thank you.

Discover Why Cheerleading May be Just as Dangerous as Football and Ways to Stay Safe

A cheerleader is flipped upside-down during a ...
Image via Wikipedia

Most parents understand football is a high-contact sport. It isn’t unusual to hear of a spinal injury or of a concussion that sends a football player to the emergency room. What might surprise them is the increased danger associated with cheerleading. Once thought of as the pep squad for athletes, cheerleaders have evolved into acrobatics. Daring stunts, flips, and twists have led many universities and schools to set restrictions on what cheerleaders can and can’t do.

Despite the restrictions, medical associations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), are seeing an increase in neck and head injuries related to cheerleading. The increase is so alarming that the AANS issued a warning about the dangers of cheerleading. It reported the following cheer-related statistics:

~ An estimated 96 percent of closed-head injuries and concussions occurred while cheerleaders were performing stunts.

~ A missed catch during a stunt resulted in a cracked skull for a 14-year-old girl. Another missed catch resulted in a second high school girl fracturing her skull when her teammates failed to catch her after a basket toss.

~ Performing on hard -surfaces without mats- results in almost 90 percent of the most serious injuries. Hard surfaces can include grass, foam floors, wood floors, and artificial turf.

~ A pyramid collapse resulted in a compression neck fracture for a 17-year-old girl.

With the proper training, cheerleaders can safely enjoy their sport. Coaches should know the current restrictions for pyramid height. If a school allows throwing, make sure there is a correct ratio of flyers to throwers to prevent missed catches. Always have the correct amount of spotters. If a cheerleading squad is attempting a high-risk stunt, it should consider increasing the number of spotters. When possible, use mats during performances and not just at practices. Cheerleaders should also monitor their health before attempting stunts. Feeling ill, being tired, or having an injury can increase the chance of injury. If an injury does occur, report the injury and make sure the cheerleader has approval from a doctor before returning to competition or cheering.

Discover the New Focus on Childhood Obesity

Many Americans believe physical fitness levels for children are indicators for childhood obesity. The standard thought is that children who have less physical activity on a daily basis will develop obesity at a later point in life, but according to the EarlyBird Diabetes Study, this thought is wrong. Conducted by a group at the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth, UK, the study attempted to answer why trials that increased physical activities for children failed to help participants lose enough weight to make a difference.

The results of the 11-year EarlyBird study indicated that obesity may in fact lead to inactivity rather than inactivity leading to obesity. The issue of obesity is of top concern for parents, as well as the US Government, because obesity can be a contributing factor to costly health problems like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. If the solution isn’t to increase fitness levels, what does this means for childhood obesity? It means the amount of fat a child has will affect physical activity over time. The more weight a child puts on, the less active she will be.

By understanding what comes first “obesity or inactivity” doctors and other fitness experts can begin to focus on methods that might cause more effective results to help with both problems. One answer that may improve the wellness of children is studying the types of foods children are consuming. Portion sizes may be too large, snacks may be full of sugar and carbs and have little nutritional value, and healthy food choices like vegetables may be missing from meals. While some people point the finger at school lunches, the study reports early feeding errors often begin at home before children even start school. While physical exercise is still important for children, it may be more important to teach them how, what, and when to eat as the way to reduce the obesity rate.
